Journeys through space and time

I don’t believe in conspiracy theories. But I do believe in evolution, in this particular sense, I’m not talking about Darwin’s theory of evolution, although I wholeheartedly believe in that. I’m talking about another kind of evolution, a more insidious type of shift.

We seem to have evolved our free-speech to such an extent that it’s simply a slogan we banter around, “free-speech” we believe in it. But it’s become so free that there’s no gravitas, it has no balls, it’s without weight, no one fights for it – we tweet and twitter, post our stuff on facebook, our friends paste their stuff on facebook, we blog (like I’m doing) , we read other peoples blogs, we identify, we commiserate, we “thumbs-up”, we retweet but we don’t do anything. There’s no consequences good or bad for our actions and, our actions with all the good intentions imbibed in them are…..well…a little pointless.

This is the evolution I’m talking about – once upon a time we could as least have the riot police chasing our ass, when we got angry about something windows got broken, things burnt, cops came out etc – I’m not advocating rioting, or maybe I am, but all this “free-speech”, it’s free because it ain’t worth shit.

In Iran for instance after the elections, free speech meant something, people fought for it, went to jail for it, got killed for it- they understand the value of free-speech, in any dictatorial society free-speech comes with a price.

I think it bears thinking about…oh there I go, think about it blog it, facebook it, tweet it and take a nap. I’m guilty too, it’s an observation is all, and it’s free.
